Perilous Times

Steel_sword_detailCenturies ago, the Saul of Tarsus who later became known, called and addressed as Apostle Paul in one of his epistles predicted that mankind shall one day experience perilous times.

Other similar words for perilous are: dangerous, hazardous, risky, and unsafe. Apostle Paul carefully listed things that would be clearly visible to very eye when the perilous times come.

These include: men shall be lovers of their ownselves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to their parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, truce breakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of good, traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God.

Looking critically at these, there is no doubt that the perilous times forecasted by the Apostle of faith is now here, when men shall be lovers of themselves. Public office holders embezzling funds meant for the development of a nation. This unholy attitude culminate in hardship and abject poverty.

The wind of terrorism blowing across the globe is a sign of perilous times. Northern part of Nigeria has become a theater of war and bloodshed. The dreaded Islamic fundamentalists’ group popularly known as Boko Haram has unleashed mayhem on the north. People are dying day by day. And the federal government under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari is yet to put the ugly situation in control.

One of the ingredients of longevity of life is honouring or respecting one’s parents. But we have come to an era when disobedience to parents is now the order of the day. The society has become a lawlessness society. The presidency is confused about the heinous activities of the Boko Haram sect.

Obedience and respect have being thrown to the dog. Children take delight in insulting elders.

No wonder that is while the death rate of young people is on the increase. People are living unrighteous life without minding the outcome of their behaviour. We have reached a period in the history of mankind that one needs to be careful in his or her day to day living so as to escape the danger associated with the perilous times. ###
