RSG To Partner Unitar On Staff Training – SSG

The Rivers State Government has stated its resolve to partner the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) in the training of indigenes of the State.
Secretary to the State Government, Kenneth Kobani made the declaration when he received representatives of UNITAR led by their leader, Dr. Lawrence Boms on a courtesy visit to him in his office in Port Harcourt.
Mr. Kobani who was informed of the already existing relationship between UNITAR and the previous administrations in the State stressed the willingness of the present administration to strengthen the relationship by partnering with the UNITAR.
In his words ”Rivers State Government remains ever prepared to partner with you in the areas that are of mutual benefit to us as a State and the United Nations as an International Organization of repute”.
The SSG who described Rivers State as land of hospitality assured United Nations representatives that the already existing relationship between them and the State Government would be harnessed for greater collaboration.
Earlier the leader of the United Nations representatives and Head/RR UNITAR in the State, Dr. Lawernce Boms stated that they had come to inform the SSG of the continued presence of United Nations Institute for Research in Nigeria particularly, Rivers State.
Dr. Boms who explained that it was important to inform the SSG of United Nations Programmes put together by the previous administration in the State especially the Master Degree Programme for Civil Servants adding that the programmes has six modules.
The programmes according to the United Nations representative were designed for Civil Servants from the level of Assistant Director depending on the level the Government chooses.
Dr. Boms disclosed that those on the programmes would still continue with their job but would have to travel to Geneva in Switzerland for the three modules and the programmes would run for 18 months.
The next level according to the United Nations representatives is the 6th module where the trainee would be equipped here in Port Harcourt to do e-learning and also do their project work, thereafter they would be awarded degree by the University of Geneva.
The second pillar of activities Dr. Boms stated is metric-based adding that the Institute has already done a Demo in a Secondary School at Elekahia in Port Harcourt.
Dr. Boms added that through this system teachers in the various schools in the State would be trained in Educational Management to reduce teachers truancy and improve their performance.
He stated the focal areas of training to include Science, Engineering and Mathematics.
