RSG Committed To Rid Port Harcourt Of Destitutes

Rivers State Government says it is committed to rid the streets of Port Harcourt of destitute, beggars and vagrant lunatics. The Permanent Secretary Ministry of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Mrs. Stella Toby stated this in her office recently while speaking to journalists.

She said that her Ministry has set up special committee to rid off vagrant lunatics and beggars in PHC with the aim of ensuring that the city is free from the nuisance and embarrassment they cause.

Mrs. Toby stated that most of the beggars are from neighbouring states and noted that when these beggars are removed from the streets and repatriated back to their states they find their way back to the state.

Earlier in an interview, the chairman of the committee Mr. Mina Jamabo said his committee has moved a total of 113 persons amongst whom are beggars, destitutes and vagrant lunatics out from major streets in Port Harcourt adding that measures are put in place to reduce their presence to the barest minimum.

Mr. Mina Jamabo said that those raided are taken to Rehabilitation Centre Iriebe where they are treated and then the non- indigenes are repatriated to their various states while the indigenes are taken care of until they are fit and then re-united with their families.
