Strike Suspension: ACN Commends Organized Labour For Good Outing … Calls For Scraping of the Office of First Lady

The Rivers State chapter of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), is thumps-up for the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the organized Civil Society Organizations, CSOs for putting up a strong, worthy and spirited engagement with the federal government over the contentious unilateral fuel subsidy removal.
Jerry Needam, Publicity Secretary of the ACN stated this in a press statement issued on behalf of the party, commending the organized labour for reaching a compromise and subsequent suspension of the seven day national strike.
Justifying the position of the organized labour, the ACN regretted that rather than instituting the platform for the necessary deregulation of the Petroleum downstream sector, the federal government unwittingly embarked on just passing the bulk on the hapless masses, thus setting itself on collision course with Labour.
The ACN spokesman, Jerry Needam, however advised labour not to rest on its oars so that the assurances, promises and agreements that led to the suspension of the strike do not go the way of previous ones that had to resurrect the public anger with greater debilitating effects on the economy.
On new realities thrown up by the cohesion of the protestations and demonstrations nationwide, Jerry Needam said there is an urgent need for government to cut down the cost of running government by abolishing a number of unconstitutional offices like the office of the First Lady at both federal and state levels, office of the wives of Local Government Council Chairmen through which large chunk of the people’s resources are wasted.
He cited Rivers State as a good example of suffering such colossal waste through the offices of the First Lady and council chairmen’s wives that have nothing to show for the monies allocated to them, calling it a worse subsidy that must be expunged instantly.
