The Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Nyema Weli, has expressed concern over the impunity with which people block the flow of drains by building on them. Dr. Weli stated this while monitoring this month Environmental Sanitation Exercise at Nnewi Street, Rumuomasi in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

The Commissioner who went to the area on a tip off expressed concern over the deliberate blocking of drainage with shanties. He therefore directed owners of  shanties to remove them within 3 days or face prosecution and also directed the illegal Aluminum fabricators to vacate the street as their activities was constituting health nuisance to other residents.

Dr. Weli on that same day visited Rumuokurushi where he directed mechanics occupying the area to remove all the abandoned vehicles. Represented by the Director of Environment, Dr. Ugochukwu Nmegbu, the Commissioner commended the people of the State for the impressive turn out to clean   their environment.

Also speaking, the State Director of National Orientation Agency, Mr. Oliver Wolugbom, called on the people of the State not to see the environmental sanitation exercise as a monthly routine, rather it should be a daily habit.
