Court Confirms King Disrael Bob-Manuel As Abonnema Monarch

DISRAEL BOB-MANUELA Port Harcourt High Court has confirmed the installation of HRH King Disrael Gbobo Bob-Manuel as the Amanyanabo of Abonnema community in the Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Delivering a judgment, the presiding judge, Justice S. H. Aprioku said that the nomination, selection and installation were in order according to the aged long traditional history of the community.

When the defense counsel, Barr. Henry Senibo was contacted he enthused that they have fought a good fight and deserve the victory.

According to him “the court has just confirmed that our client, Chief Disrael Gbobo Bob-Manuel was properly selected and installed by the Owukori or Manuel House of Abonema in accordance with the Kalabari native laws and customs.” Also confirming that the Abonnema Council of Chiefs were right and justified to install him as the Amanyanabo of Abonnema, adding the claimant has failed to prove their case and was thrown out.”

Barr. Senibo said the implication of the case is that Chief Disreal Gbobo Bob-Manuel is the right and proper person to ascend the royal second class stool and should be presented to the Rivers State Governor for ‘recognition forth-with.

But counsel to the claimants, Barr. Nick A. Lambert disagreed with the court and promised to appeal the ruling. According to him, “the judgment is unsatisfactory and therefore unacceptable to us”.

He argued that by the Kalabari customs and native laws only the head of the Owukori Royal House has the exclusive right to initiate a succession process to a vacant stool, and that the nomination, selection and installation of the defendant was sureptiously done by few king makers even when the burial rites of the last occupant, late Morgan Bob-Manuel was yet to be concluded adding the secret installation took place reminiscent of a coup detact.

“Moreover, Barr. Lambert said all their witnesses cross examined caved in to our advantage which further strengthened our hope of achieving justice.”

Another argument advanced by the claimants is that the ancient stool has a precedent of being occupied by the descendants of the royal family from direct sons to grandsons before the great grandsons accordingly and that Chief Gbobo Bob-Manuel is a great grandson whose turn is yet very far from the hierarchy according to age.

It would also be recalled that the conspirators bypassed the reagent Chief Godwin Anabraba Briggs who was supposed to crown the Amanyanabo but chose one Chief lnye Georgewill for the  job and died shortly after the secret ceremony.

Not a few Abonnema citizens interviewed accepted the ruling which they described as abomination. ###
