Yenagoa: Fire Destroys Hausa Quarters

One person has reportedly been injured, while properties worth over millions of naira were destroyed by an inferno that razed sections of the Hausa quarters on Arietallin Street, a suburb of Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

Though the main cause of the fire could not be ascertained, an eye witness, Mr. Lawali Bello, said the fire was caused by a food vendor.

No fewer than 50 makeshift apartments were affected, while a mosque was partly burnt by the fire.

Meanwhile, the food vendor who hails from Nassarawa State had since fled for fear of arrest.

A yam seller, Mr. Murtala Mohammed said he lost all his goods and household properties to the inferno, which lasted for more than 40 minutes, saying he has been rendered homeless.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, Alex Akhigbe, said the fire which was put off by the fire service, police and public spirited individuals, affected some makeshift apartments, adding that no life was lost.
