UNEP Report Implementation: Fraudsters Invade Ogoni – MOSOP

The Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP) has raised alarm over the invasion of Ogoni by suspected fraudsters claiming to be contractors of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

MOSOP President, Mr. Legborsi Pyagbara, who raised the alarm

at a meeting of the Ogonis at the weekend in Bori, the traditional headquarters of Ogoniland, alleged that some people were going about selling forms at the cost of N3,000, promising job opportunities for the people during the implementation of the UNEP report.

He said that apart from collecting the sum of N3,000, the fraudsters were also requesting for curricula vitae from Ogoni youths in respect of the clean up exercise.

Pyagbara, who urged the people to be vigilant, said MOSOP was not aware of any empowerment programme as far as the UNEP report implementation was concerned, and described those perpetrating the act as fraudsters and enemies of the people, stressing that this is the time the people must open their eyes to avoid being duped.

Meanwhile, MOSOP has called for explanation from the Federal Government over the continuous delay in the implementation of the UNEP Report on the oil pollution of Ogoniland.

Pyagbara, who said this at a meeting last weekend in Bori, said that there is need for explanation since the cleanup exercise did not start from January as earlier proposed, adding that “Government should come out to tell the people what is happening since January has past”.

According to him, the continuous delay in the implementation of the report has put the Ogoni environment at a big risk of becoming extinct.

He, however, promised that a blue-print would be released by MOSOP to work with the Federal Government with a view to fast-tracking the implementation of the report.
