Bayelsa: Shooting As Rescheduled State Assembly Poll Holds

The candidates of All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, were, at the weekend, declared winners in Brass Constituency 2 and Ogbia Constituency 2 seats in the rescheduled House of Assembly election in Bayelsa State held on Saturday amidst sporadic shootings by suspected thugs.

The rescheduled election was marred by allegations of hijack of election materials and voters apathy due to shooting by gunmen suspected to be hired thugs and without reaction from hundreds of deployed security personnel in the areas.

It was learned that the election in Brass Constituency 2 witnessed large turn out of voters with the APGA candidate, Alfred Watson, defeating the candidates of the ruling PDP and the All Progressives Congress, APC, with 849 votes.

According to the result declared at 5a.m. on Sunday, by the Returning Officer and a lecturer in the state university, Niger Delta University, Mr. Perekere Bertola, out of the 2,805 accredited voters, the APGA candidate scored 849 votes, the PDP candidate scored 380 and APC scored 476 votes.

Some of the supporters of the APGA candidate claimed that attempt by suspected PDP supporters to allegedly collude with the security personnel and hijack the voting materials and declare the election inconclusive, was thwarted by youths from the constituency.

At Ogbia constituency 2, it was gathered that the turn-out of voters was poor and materials were hijacked from the voting venues by some armed men and uniformed policemen.
