Editorial: The Significance Of Lent

Wednesday, February 10, 2016 begins the period of Lent. Lent is a period of fasting that will last for forty (40) days. The Lenten season is the important in the life of every Christian. This time is set aside for fasting and introspection, confession and penance for many Christians.
The 40-day period reflects the suffering endured by Jesus Christ, the founder of the Christian faith. When he fasted in the wilderness of the deserted before the beginning of his earthly ministry. Jesus performed greater signs and wonders after his forty (40) days fast. As Christians and believers it is expected to follow the sound teachings and doctrines of Jesus Christ, if they actually want to be with him hereafter.
Besides fasting and prayer, the Lenten season is a period of sound spiritual exercise that will enable believers to look inward whether they are still in faith or not, and to amend where necessary.
It is not a period to engage in any immoral behavior or wrong doing. Christians should use this period to express love to one another. One of the things that is lacking in every human society is love. Because of lack of love, there is so much atrocities in the society such as kidnapping, armed robbery, senseless killings, embezzlement of public funds amongst several other social vices.
Christians who are occupying public offices and holding elective positions should use this lent period to initiate programmes and policies that will put smiles on the faces of the masses. ####
