It is no news that Nigerians are madly in love with the European league, mostly the English premier league, where the likes of Aiyegbeni, one of Nigeria’s hottest striker of the moment in England, Osaze Odewinge, found scour and bagging in the goals with pleasure. But this is not the reason why Nigerians are crazy about the English premier league.
The English premier league is madly followed and loved by Nigerians, dumping their football league here in Nigeria, because the English premier league is well organized, with juicy welfare packages for the players. What is lacking in Nigeria here is the lack of interest by both players and football followers to pledge their unalloyed support to it.
Just as I was filing in this report, one of Nigerian home based heroes in the premier league, Ajagun, has been declared missing in the Dolphin football camp, where he plays his football. Dolphins is a Port Harcourt based club sponsored by the Rivers State government.
According to the media officer of the club, China Acheru, he might just be on trial with a clubside overseas. These are some of the problems facing players as their sign on fees, allowances are not being paid to them as when due. A player like Ajagun, has played for the country under 17, under 20 teams. By all standards Ajagun could be declared Nigerian football hero and ambassador.
If only the country’s football could be shaped and organized like that of the European league, retiring players from the European league could retire properly by coming back home to play in the Nigeria league. ###
