Tough Times Await Telecomms Service Providers

More sanctions await telecommunicati-ons service providers from the month of September, if users still experience poor services or no net-work services while communicating with GSM
The Communication Director, Public Affairs, Nigerian Communication Commission [NCC],Tony Ojobo said NCC has given communication service providers till September to ensure improvement and quality of service delivery
It will be recalled that NCC and telecomms users have been claiming millions of Naira from telecomms service providers for poor quality services and charging more than the stipulated tariff [fee] even when service or sms messages are not delivered. This medium has successfully carried out public opinion within Port Harcourt metropolis and other local government areas to ascertain the truth about poor telecomms among the telecomms service providers.
From the opinion of the public this medium gathered that all the telecomms (net-work) service providers have something up their sleeves, categorically pointing fingers at Airtel which has had several names since its inception in the communication business and starcomms.
Some alleged that even when sms was sent to you to enter a code for low tariff charges, there has always been ‘terms and conditions’ which have never been explained to the service users.
Meanwhile those who use Airtel alleged that Airtel charges three to four times per sms sent to one person (Airtell to Airtel) at N3 each charge, N5 and N10 (three to four times charge) respectively for other net-works, pointing out that they have been visiting Airtel’s office at Onne road, new GRA in Port Harcourt to make oral complaints, but to no avail.
Some further claimed that they have written protest letters to NCC to that effect.
“All Airtell’s customers care numbers from 111 to 112 are not working. You will call and call until you get tried”, they concluded.
In a related development the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC] said it has licensed 402 operational broadcasting stations within the last twenty (20) years.
The Director General of NBC, Yomi Bolarinwan stated this in a press statement to mark twenty years of NBC’s existence.
Bolarinwan said that out of the licensed operational broadcasters, one hundred and twenty three were privately owned, adding NBC has made positive impact and good service delivery in broadcasting profession and brought sanity to nations coverage by broadcasting stations within the period of operation, as NBC was working on licensing community broadcast stations and transmition from analogue to digital broadcasting. #
