UNEP Report: Ogoni Leaders Reject Appointment of Amina, Edun

President Muhammadu Buhari has been urged to immediately reverse the appointment of Amina Mohanuned as the Chairman, Governing Advisory Council on the UNEP report implementation, and Wale Edun as Chairman of its Board of Trustees.

Ogoni Conscience and Development Network, a socio-political organisation, said it was an ’embarrassment’, that despite the credible professionals that abound in the Niger Delta, the Federal Government did not deem it fit to appoint Niger Deltans to occupy the positions.

In a letter addressed to President Muhamrnadu Buhari, and signed by Mr. Ledum Gbaranee and Giftson Batam, the organisation described the appointments as a ‘betrayal’ and warned that the situation was capable of heating up Ogoniland.

The letter reads in part: “This is an Ogoni matter in its entirety and cannot be handled by strangers, who know nothing about our struggle and have played no role in the emancipation of the Ogoni ethnic nationality. The Niger Delta region has enough professionals that can handle these positions of both Chairman of the Board and the Governing Council of the UNEP report implementation in Ogoni land. We would not hesitate to go in protest, should the Federal Government fail to review its position on this matter. This development is not only humiliating and a betrayal, but an indication that the arrangement is nothing but a politically motivated one to the detriment of the members of Ogoniland.”
