Environment Commissioner Tasks Public On Daily Sanitation Exercise

The Rivers State commissioner for Environment, Dr. Nyema Weli has called on members of the public to inculcate the habit of cleaning their environment everyday.
Dr. Weli gave the advice in a chat with journalists during this month’s environmental sanitation exercise in Port Harcourt.
The commissioner who recalled an adage which says cleanliness is next to Godliness, noted that it is the duty of the public to ensure daily cleaning of their environment, sensitize other individuals on the need for clean environment and not to wait until the monthly sanitation exercise.
According to him, monthly sanitation exercise is not the only day to sensitize our brothers and sisters but a daily exercise, so every opportunity you get remind them on the need for clean environment, because it is our duty to clean our environment. He emphasized that what government is doing on the monthly sanitation day is to assist the public by providing the materials and sensitize them more on the need for clean environment.
Addressing the traders at Bishop Okoye Street, Mile 3 Port Harcourt, Dr. Weli noted that the reason for monthly sanitation exercise was to remind public on the need to clean their environment and urged them not to wait until government chases them around before they clean their environment.
The Environment Commissioner urged women leaders, mothers and adults to always show good example by sensitizing their children on the importance of clean environment and warned the public not to or walk from one place or the other during monthly sanitation exercise, but should rather concentrate on cleaning their houses, environments until after 10 am when the exercise will be over.
Dr. Weli who frowned at the manner in which people dump their refuse on the roads, warned those who were involved in such shameful act to desist.
According to him, the “Laws are there for us, it is made for human beings and not for animals, we need not be flogged before we obey it”. ###
