Mother Charged With Murder After Westchester Boy, 4, Found Dead

Police have charged a 46-year-old Westchester woman with murder after they found her 4-year-old son dead in their bedroom Monday.
Manuela Maria Morgado was arraigned in Village of Mamaroneck Court and remanded to Westchester County without bail.
She is due back in court Oct. 4. It’s not immediately clear if she has an attorney.
Officers were called to 1035 East Boston Post Rd. in the village of Mamaroneck at about 10:20 a.m. Monday, when a concerned family member asked to check on the well-being of Morgado.
When police entered the bedroom there, they found the boy, Jason Reish, dead, and his mother groggy and semi-conscious.
Morgado was transported to the hospital for evaluation. Authorities say she killed her son, then tried to kill herself. A person in law enforcement told The Associated Press that Morgado had taken some pills in a failed suicide attempt. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the details had not been made public.
“He was a great kid,” said Reish’s pre-school teacher, who did not want to be identified. “That’s all I can say.”
The tragedy startled neighbors at the suburban apartment complex in Mamaroneck. Those who knew the Reish family said there was no hint of any trouble in the home.
“She’s just a sweet person,” neighbor Andrew Landau said of the boy’s mother. “Nothing bad I could say about her. Nothing that would say I saw them fighting or whatever. Nothing at all.”
