Editorial:Emergency Rule, Proscription Of Boko Haram, The Needful To National Safety

The continued killing of Christians and destruction of properties from the Northern parts of Nigeria by the dreaded Islamic sect, Boko Haram was a source of worry to virtually all Nigerians who are conscious of the fact that it is against humanity and God.

The spate of killings and wanton destruction of properties was long tolerated by the Federal Government which measures to quell it was handled with kids glove.

In the midst of severe pains and cries of the populace the government seemed adamant over the situation but with pleadings with the sect to down tool their arms and accept dialogue as offered by the Federal Government.

Though reactions trail the dialogue offer proposed by the Federal Government to the sect, the federal government did not give up to ensure that peace is brought to the northern parts of the country.

Yet, amidst the offers, the Federal Government went on to proposed the highest peace offer, “Amnesty” which many Nigerians kicked against the sect, as a measure to end the insurgency in the land but without head way.

To many Nigerians, amnesty is offered to criminals and particularly those whose intensions and cause are genuine but were branded with criminality or rebellion in order to silence them.

The sect which never believed in western education, the chief of all training however lack the courage to stand out for any feasible and concrete demand as their actions are not tenable.

When it become obvious that, the sect have pushed the nation to the wall, the Federal Government led by president Goodluck Ebele Jonathan had to slam state of emergency rule in Yobe, Borno and Adamawa states after due consultations with appropriate authorities.

The pronouncement of emergency rule in the three Northern states attracted applauses from different quarters of the federation and eminent personalities across the country except the likes of Rtd. General Mahamadu Buhari who envied the amnesty and training of the Niger Delta ex-militants.

The emergency rule declaration has so far delivered these three Northern states into the hands of the military though the democratic institutions of those states remains intact, and result s are emerging.

It becomes imperative to note that, with the coming on board the military in those states, things have not been as before, since the insurgents are fleeing the states for their lives.

However, the Federal troops deployed to the states are working hard to ensure that peace returns. Some supposed lucky ones who fled the states are either arrested or killed at various boarders.

It is also noted that since the presence of the Federal Government troops in the states, the activities of these sects have drastically reduced.

As if the emergency rule was not enough, the Federal Government moves on to legally proscribed the sects and subsequently prescribed 20 years jail term for its members.

The government secured an order from the Federal High Court Abuja to ban Jama’utu Ahlis-Sunna Liddaawati Waljihad (Boko Haram) and Jama’utu Ansarul Muslimina Fi Biladis Sudan (JAMBS) from existing or operating in the country.

In proscribing the two groups, the government invoked section 2 of “The Prevention of Terrorism Act 2011” in approaching the court.

The proscription order was granted by Justice A. Abdu Kafarati on May 25th, 2013.

The motion ex-parte from the office of the Attorney General of the Federation was supported by what a source in the court described as “revealing affidavit sworn to by the Litigation Officer in civil Litigation Department of the Federal Ministry of Justice, Ballah Alli.

This order was obtained so as to enable government enforce the ongoing operation by Special Forces in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states.

It is also to enhance the government need to overrun the Boko Haram and Ansarul and apprehend all their sponsors.

Therefore, it is on the foregoing that, The Newswriter throws her weight behind the Federal Government quest and views to restore the needed peace to the land. A step we upheld in utmost loyalty.

Northern parts of Nigeria recently have been embroiled in acts of Terrorism against the people especially the Christians and non indigenes doing business there.

We salute the Federal Government effort and courageous status to halt the activities of the insurgents in the country.

We also urge the Federal Government to beam its searchlight on the fleeing sects members across the states of the federation so as to stem their further operations in the land. ###
