A 3 day workshop for staff of Ministry of Commerce and Industry with the theme ”Enhancing Performances in the Public Service through Human Capital Development” was held recently at the Conference Hall, Ministry of Justice Port Harcourt. Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Hon. Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Mr. Chuma C. Chinye reiterated the need for staff training and advised staff to take advantage of the rare opportunity to upgrade their knowledge.
Mr. Chinye pointed out that the training workshop is very crucial to his administration, and stressed that Civil Servants must be well trained as they the engine room of Government. The Commissioner noted that the participants were drawn from all the Departments of the Ministry.
He said that the training is to expose them to ethics and discipline, financial regulation, leadership skills, public service rules among others. Mr. Chinye encouraged staff who are undergoing the training to make use of the skills acquired in other to improve on performance and efficiency.
He hinted that the Ministry of Commerce has established new units which are the weight and measurement, the Planning Research and Statistics Unit. The Commissioner advised the staff to understand the rules and regulations which are embedded in the Public Service Rules.
In his speech, the Head of Service, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary Policies and Strategy, Mr. Emmanuel Urang, advised Civil Servants to take advantage of laudable capacity training programmes such as the Rivpoly Diploma programme and other certificate programmes. Barr. LongJohn pointed out that the Rivers State Government through the office of the Head of Service has opened windows for oversea training programmes for all degree holders in the Civil Service. He lauded the Commissioner for initiating the training programme and advised the participants to show seriousness in the training and appreciate Government efforts.
