A call has gone to the Federal and State Governments to introduce one year compulsory military service to youths under the age of 18 years and above rather than limiting their usefulness to only the one year compulsory youth service corp.
The first military governor of Old Rivers State and Amayanabo of Twon Brass, HRH King Alfred Diette-Spiff made this call while speaking at the 9th Port Harcourt International Trade Fair at Isaac Boro Park.
He said, the State and Federal Governments should consider it important to introduce one year compulsory military service to youths of 18 years above, saying the youths could be made to join any of the military formations in the federation to serve for one year before any other employment opportunity be given to them in the country.
According to him, this is to help take care of the electoral system in other to curb indiscipline and social vices in the society, since the youths are the life wire of the society.
He added that it is a great omission as well as a big vacuum that the state is loosing potential value which would be added to the society by the youths of this country as to comfortably take care of malpractices in examination, electoral malpractices and other social vices in the society during elections.
He cited Cassius Clay as one figure that was made to see reality by the than Government of America before he was allowed as a professional career boxer to practice to pass through the one year compulsory military service for his nation.
The elderstateman therefore urged the electoral officers to go to the schools and list all who are 18 years and above to compulsorily enlist for the one year compulsory military service scheme for the country to have a no mistake care free and fair election come 2015. ###
