Indiscriminate Parking: Phalga Council Goes Tough On Tanker Drivers

The Port Harcourt City Local Government Council has frowned at the indiscriminate parking by Petroleum Tankers and dumping of refuse on the streets of the State capital.
The Caretaker Committee Chairman of the Port Harcourt City, Barrister Clifford Oparaodu stated this on Monday while inspecting some streets in the area.
Barr. Oparaodu warned that the Council will not no longer tolerate tanker drivers carrying petroleum products obstructing traffic at the UTC, Abonnema and some section of Azikiwe road axis of the State capital.
He noted that the indiscriminate parking by tanker drivers was not only obstructing flow of traffic but also posed serious risk to many road users, noting that it is against the mission of the present administration effort at ensuring free flow of traffic and returning sanity to the State capital.
The Chairman, however called on the tankers drivers, the NUPENG, and other authorities concerned to advise the drivers to move their trucks from the places they are presently parked.
”I appeal to the drivers, the union and traffic division of the police force to adequately direct them to move these vehicles as lives and properties of other roads users are put in danger” he said.
He also warned resident against indiscriminate dumping of refuse along the streets, and drainages in the city, adding that there are designated places for dumping refuse.
He called on residents of the city to be conscious of the health hazards associated with an unhygienic environment, adding that the Council may consider setting up a task force that will arrest and prosecute offenders.###
