EDITORIAL: The Political Class and The Spirit of Sportsmanship

Just as a prolific writer said “when the purpose of a thing is not known its abuse becomes inevitable. This has just proven to be true as different events unravel in our political environment.

Politics today has become an issue of backbiting and name calling and least of all the tarnishing, not just the image of an opponent or winner but also carrying out wicked acts that would frustrate the administration of those in power.

The spirit of sportsmanship is an important emotion every political leader or aspirant should posses as it takes the issues of the state or nation at heart and not for personal interest to instigate name calling.

Politics is not a do or die affair or an individual job, it is simply a responsibility for someone to represent the people. This means you are there to serve the masses and not a personal merchandise where terrorism becomes the order of the day because a position is lost.

Sportsmanship should be encouraged because it shows a sense of maturity and responsibility in the political sphere by aspirants using the former president Goodluck Ebele Jonathan as a case study showed a good example of sportsmanship during the 2015 presidential election by peacefully congratulating his opponent and handed over power.

Conclusively, the spirit of sportsmanship brings peace and also makes everyone to work not for personal interest but that of the state for the greater good of all.  ###
