APC chieftain killed in Bayelsa

Gunmen yesterday stormed the residence of Mr Sunday Frank-Oputu, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa State and shot him dead.

Frank-Oputu, who served as the state chairman of the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP), was shot dead through his bedroom window in his Bay-Bridge home in Yenagoa.

He was asleep when the assailants killed him.He was said to have left his window open to enable him to receive fresh air as there was no light in the neighbourhood.

Frank-Oputu, described as the voice of the opposition party in the state, had a running litigation battle across the political space of his party and his community in Southern Ijaw council.

He was said to have opposed the leadership style of Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Timipre Sylva, though he maintained that he had nothing personal against him.

He was also a member of the faction of the APC loyal to the former Minister of State for Agriculture and Rural Development, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri.Frank-Oputu fought against illegal oil bunkering in his community. Police spokesman Asinimi Bustwat confirmed the incident. Meanwhile Gov. Diri has directed the security agents to fish out the culprits, and ordered a probe into the unfortunate incident.
