Fuel Subsidy Crisis: Rivers ACN Backs Labour

The Rivers State Chapter of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has declared support for the indefinite nation-wide strike declared by the organized labour in Nigeria commencing, Monday January 9, 2012.
The Action Congress of Nigeria, Rivers State chapter in a statement signed by the publicity secretary, Jerry Needam regretted that the PDP government in Nigeria chose to withdraw subsidy on January 1, 2012 when the present stock of petroleum product in the market has already been subsidized.
ACN further regretted that instead of President Goodluck Jonathan rising to the daily challenges of insecurity in Nigeria, Boko Haram’s killings of innocent persons and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike that has paralysed the tertiary education for almost 3 months today, he withdrew fuel subsidy at a time everybody is unhappy, grieving and in pains as a result of his anti people style of administration that has created deep wounds in the minds of every Nigerians
ACN saw the widespread protest across the country in response to the surreptitious removal of fuel subsidy and the casualties recorded so far as unfortunate and an avoidable tragedy, if President Jonathan had listen to the voice of Nigerians.
The party called on President GoodLuck Jonathan and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to apologise to Nigerians and families of those who have so far lost the lives of loved ones in the fuel subsidy removal protest.
ACN further called on President Goodluck Jonathan to pay compensation to those who lost their loved ones and give national honours to the deceased.
While supporting the mass protest and indefinite nation-wide strike declared by the organized labour, ACN urged President Goodluck Jonathan to avert further casualities and hardship occasioned by the fuel subsidy removal by reverting back to the normal pump price and engage Nigerians in discussions on the contentious fuel subsidy removal before taking further steps.
The party urged organized labour, human rights groups and all Nigerians to remain focused, committed and not to be deterred by governments’ antics including harassment, intimidation and arrest in their fight against the fuel subsidy removal.
The party chided President Goodluck Jonathan for welcoming Nigerians into the New Year with actions that will further impoverished and exterminate the already agonized people of Nigeria.
ACN called on all its teaming supporters in the state to join the organized labour in the mass protest and indefinite nation-wide strike.
