Ogoni Self Government Transition Committee Gets More Time

The President of Council of Ogoni Churches (COC), Sir Mike Ibira has asked for extension of time for the Ogoni Self Government Transition Committee.
Sir Ibira who heads the Committee said three more weeks are required to complete the Committee’s assignment and to finalize the preparation of an official report.
He spoke on Sunday, September 9, 2012 at a joint session of Ogoni Central Indigenous Authority (OCIA) sitting in Teyork at the Ogoni National Territory and the joint session granted the 3-week extension.
OCIA was established to enforce the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
Sir Ibira said his committee is determined to reach out to those local government council members that do not reside in Ogoni and called for a little more patience to ensure a peaceful change-over.
The committee now has until Monday, October 1, 2012 to conclude its work.
MOSOP President/Spokesman, Dr. Goodluck Diigbo said OCIA will strengthen the Committee in the final phase of its assignment.
The joint session was attended by the interim leadership of OCIA, Council of Ogoni Traditional Rulers Association (COTRA), National Youth Council of Ogoni People (NYCOP), Federation of Ogoni Women Association (FOWA), Ogoni Teachers Union, National Union of Ogoni Students (NUOS), Ogoni Farmers Council, Ogoni Technical Association, Council of Ogoni Professionals, Ogoni Central Union and Ogoni Students Union (OSU).
