High-flying Eaglets Lose

Nigeria failed to replicate the form against Ghana as they fell 1-0 to Cote d’Ivoire on Wednesday in the CAF U17 Championship in Morocco.

Cote d’Ivoire thus lead Group B on four points, Nigeria are second on three points, while Ghana and Congo play in the late game of the day.

Substitute Niamgbo scored the back-breaking winner in the 90th minute after skipper Musa Mohammed lost the ball close to the 18-yard box and goalkeeper Adeyemi Adewale failed to deal with the cross, before Ahissan cut the ball out for the scorer.

The Golden Eaglets met a tough and physical Ivorian side and they could not get a shot on target throughout the first half.

Ahissan was Cote d’Ivoire’s tormentor-in-chief, but Nwakali was always on hand to stop him from wrecking damage.

However, he almost broke the deadlock in the 35th minute, when he failed to hit the target from 12 yards when he was left free.

Isaac Success shot was blocked by Tano.

Bakayoko almost put Ivorians ahead two minutes into the second half, when his volley from 10 yards hit the crossbar after beating Adewale in the Eaglets goal.

In the 50th minute, Jimoh forced a save from Adewale after an exchange of passes with Bakayoko.

The Golden Eaglets first shot on target was in the 58th minute when Awoniyi forced a save from Ivorian goalkeeper Jagabate.

Enterprising Bulbwa’s 25-yard shot in the 77th minute hit the cross bar for a goal kick.

Tano was red carded for a second bookable offence after a foul on Success in the fourth minute of added time.
