Obalga: Attorney-General Faults Justice Iyaye-Lamikanra’s Verdict

The Attorney General of Rivers State, Worgu Boms addressed newsmen on Friday at the Government House, over the reactions following the dissolution of the Obio/Akpor Local Government Council by Rt. Hon. Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, the Governor of Rivers State.

He expressed his disappointment over the misinformation. In his words “When law is discussed, it should be divorced from politics for a clearer understanding.”

Boms maintained that the judgment of Hon. Justice Iyaye- Lamikanra with due respect was a misguided.

Worgu Boms maintained that the suit leading to the judgment did not have anything to so with the council’s dissolution but the suspension of the chairman and executive members. It would amount to a contradiction to affirm the governor’s power. He made it known that the power behind the exercise of the Governor was not derived from the judgment of Hon. Justice Iyaye-Lamikanra, but from the Local Government Law.

The Attorney-General said in his words, “we do not agree with her in her judgment, there was no jurisdiction when it was delivered. I am referring to her judgment because that is what they are using to say that what the Governor did was wrong. Gentle men, it is the Government and no matter the degree of impunity, some of us will insist on clinging to the law, it may be uncomfortable, but it remains the law until it is changed”. ###
