Policing the Nigeria Police

All over the world, the Police Force is charged with the responsibility of maintaining law and order in any given society.

Thus the police detect and combat crimes in the society. So many police officers have gone out of their statutory functions and engage in activities that do not dignify the Nigeria Police Force. Most police officers behave as if they are above the laws of the land.

In Port Harcourt and its environs police officers now mount road blocks on so many major streets in the city. They do this to extort money from commercial motorists and other private drivers.

In most occasions, drivers are being forced to pay N100 or else such drivers would be illegally detained . Police no longer carry out thorough checks on individuals likely to commit crime, but any suspect can go scot-free if he gives a paltry sum of N50 to a police officer on duty. What a shame!

Beside the gross misconduct of our police officers, they look tattered. How can a police officer on duty dress like a tout or thug? Most police officers including the females, look dirty and unkempt, while on their duty post. The police need re-orientation and re-training to keep them abreast of modern policing and security.

We can state here categorically that our Police Force lacks respect and decorum, because of their actions and inactions in the public. They have failed the society severally. The relevant agencies need to police the Nigeria Police Force to properly guide its officers in the right perspective. ###
