PAINFUL SIGHTS AND MEMORIES

When will change come?
How can we go about the transformation agenda?
What really triggers us
To do the wrong we wish we shouldn’t do?
Where lies our power to do the right?
Soon? With patience and hope?
The devil you believe? In God!

Let me not see those weeping faces
Let me not see those falling tears!
The burnt cars, houses, injured people
The displaced men, women, children and dead bodies!
Cars painted blues, red, green, brown, ash
Turned into black, as black as charcoal.

Show me not those weeping faces
Show me not those falling tears!
From the cheeks of the bereaved who lost loved
From the cheeks of the children orphaned.
Remind me not of the various bomb blasts
Remind me not of the Biafran war my mama told me.

Some mothers threw their crying babies
In the sea for fear of being caught
Women’s breast cut off, mortar pestle
Forced into their womanhood
Unborn children force out of their serene environment
Men who died from the sharp bladed
Matchets, gun shots, daggers,
Men lost their wives to soldiers
Tension climbed the hills and mountains
Tears overflowed buckets, basins, drum, water pots
Tears from the marvelous mothers
Who had no the whereabouts of their children
Everyone was a casualty the survivors
Survived to tell the stories
The one legged, one handed, one eyes, one,
Eared, all lost to bomb shells!

My head is heacy, my heart’s panting
I can’t answer the questions flooding
My head like flood
My head is heavy, my heart’s panting
I can’t answer the questions bordering
My simple, stricken, sorrowful soul like the waves of the sea.

In Nigeria today, the poor getting poorer
The rich getting richer
In Nigeria today the old cankerworm still
Living and destroying the resources of my beloved
Elephants, lions, bees, scorpions, even the tortoise
Live, the grass and weak and lonely will suffer.

God’s intervention and a God sent angel, are
What my country, my beloved need!
Don’t mention war to me
No not war but peace and ceaseless bliss
To wipe the painful sight and memories.
