Assembly Fracas: Why We Set Up Judicial Commission- RSG

The Rivers State  Government has explained the reason  why it set  up an 9-man member of  judicial commission of inquiry into the recent fracas at the State House of Assembly.According to governor Chibuike Amaechi while inaugurating the body Monday, 15 October, 2013 at the Executive Chambers of the Government House. Port Harcourt, the essence is bring enduring peace to the State Legislature. The governor who was represented by his Deputy, Engr, Tele Ikuru charged the members of the commission to investigate and ascertain the immediate and remote causes of the crisis. He also directed them to uncover  those involved directly or indirectly in the crisis, the number of persons injured or threatened with injury. They were equally asked to ascertain properties destroyed, their owners and the value of such properties, whether external or internal persons or factors outside the Assembly  influenced or were involved in the crisis and to what extent, and investigate any other matter or matters that may come to the knowledge of the commission in the course of its deliberations, not covered in their terms of reference. The governor stressed that  the peace and security of the people is paramount in his administration’s policy direction and everything would be done to ensure this  throughout his tenure. He said  that  the idea is to bring lasting peace in the Assembly and the  State at large. The commission was given up to October,15  2013 to submit its report.

Responding on behalf of his colleagues, Chairman of the commission and a High Court Judge in Port Harcourt, Justice Biobele .A. Georgewill, assured that the commission would carry out its duty in faith and integrity of the law for the restoration of peace in the State, while asking for the support of the Government in implementing the recommendations of  the commission.

The members are:
