Meat Sellers Demand Better Deal

Rivers Meat Butchers and Seller urge RSG to stop meat from other state into Rivers market. Set up Taskforce to monitor and enforcement illegal meat sellers.

The meat butchers and sellers under the aegis of Wazobia Butcher Meat and Seller Union, Rivers State Chapter have urged the Rivers State Government to do something about the illegal meat sellers.

Mr. Waii Alani, the Chairman of Wazobia Butcher Union has called on the Rivers State Government to sI.op those who are bringing unhygienic and unwholesome practices of meat sellers from neighboring states into Rivers State Market. He told journalists in his office that if something is not done it will bring a bad image to the State. He also called on the Rivers State Government to collaborate with NASSI and other agencies to set up Rivers State Taskforce on Environment and other special offenses.

The Wazobia Butchers Union stated that butchers and meat sellers in Rivers State operating abattoirs and pay our tax, levy, dues, income tax to Rivers State Government Treasury, we are not happy that meat is coming from neighboring State and that this meat sellers and traders are not residing in Rivers State, some of them come from Aba, Abia, Akwa Ibom and other states where they paid their tax and their revenue to the Government of their state”.

He advised the Rivers State Government to look into the issues that is affecting the butchers and the meat sellers”. He also called on the Rivers State Commissioner of Police to come to their aid because nobody inspect the meat that this illegal meat sellers bring into Rivers State market. The Chairman urged the government to look into the cost of cattles which he said had become too expenses for many butchers.

The Wazobia Butchers Union boss appealed to the Rivers State Government for meat butchers and sellers support fund scheme so as to enable them to meet up the high demand of meat in the market by their numerous customers. He also pointed that if the government and the commercial banks including Microfinance Bank through NASSI Micro-partners Microfinance scheme to provide a meat butchers and sellers loan for them to be able to grow like their counterpart in Lagos and other part of the countries. That the LAPO Microfinance Bank cannot provide a loan that will enable them to meet up the demand of meat in the market. He also stated that the unions are ready to partner with any agencies which is ready to give loan to its members. He also speak on the forthcoming election of the union which is coming up on November this year. ###
