Amaechi’s LGA Chairmen Plan Defection To PDP

Politics is a game of conspiracy and uncertainty. Thus, it is very difficult to predict any event in politics. Reliable information had it that the current local government chairmen, that were elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on May 23, 2015 might dump their original party for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The circumstances in which they emerged as council chairmen are questionable and many politicians, said that the conduct of the 23rd May, 2015 local government election was full of errors, therefore stinking.

Before he was sworn-in, the governor of Rivers State, Chief Nyesom Wike, during a public lecture in Port Harcourt, made it open that the council election conducted by the Prof. Augustine Ahaizu led Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) was faulty.

The governor said that such an illegal situation cannot stand in the State. Prior to this time, the Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) under the leadership of Bro. Felix Obuah and other registered political parties had sounded loud and clear that, the RISEC did not give the mandatory ninety (90) days notice to their parties to participate.

As a result, PDP and fifteen (15) other parties boycotted the said council polls. However, the ongoing event on the Rivers political landscape, there is every likelihood that the incumbent governor will not allow the LGA Chairmen to continue to pilot the affairs of the government at the grassroots. Sometime ago Chief Wike made it known in the public that, even if he dissolves the council, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari would not frown at him, because of the illegal nature of the conduct of the council poll.

Fear of possible dissolution of the council, some of the LGA chairmen had made up their mind to join the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), so that they would escape the hammer from the State governor.

Our investigation revealed that, the Rivers State House of Assembly will in no distant time call for the dissolution of the council to pave way for the appointment of Caretaker Committee members to take charge of the Rivers councils.
