Bravo! Rivers Assembly

The legislature is an important arm of government. Its basic responsibility borders on enacting good laws for the overall benefits of the citizenry. Democracy cannot work effectively without the presence of the legislature. The legislature monitors the activities of the other two organs of the government namely: executive and judiciary.

In the past two years in Rivers State, this pertinent arm of government has not been functioning effectively until June 1, 2015, when the new government of Chief Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike proclaimed the 8th Rivers Assembly. Shortly after its inauguration, the House swung into action, which many Rivers people described as a welcome development.

On Monday this week the House summoned the chairmen and members of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) and Rivers State Judicial Commission to its hallow chamber. After hours of deliberation the House under the leadership of Rt. Hon. Ikuinyi-Owaji Ibani empowered the Governor of the state, Chief Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike to dissolve the two commissions.

Now the two commissions stand dissolved based on irregularities and maladministration. Rivers peoples applaud the dissolution of these two commissions.

The manner and the way in which the House starts its legislative business, we hope strongly that in no distant time Rivers people will begin to enjoy the dividends of democracy that have eluded them in the past four (4) years. Without any reservation we say well done, Rivers State House of Assembly. ###
