BREAKING THE CHAINS OF GODFATHERISM: A PATH TO POLITICAL FREEDOM FOR RIVERS STATE

Meg Deborah Enobun

A Democracy Held Hostage:

Rivers State stands at a critical juncture in its democratic journey. For decades, the state’s political landscape has been shaped – sometimes quietly, sometimes openly – by the influence of godfatherism. This culture, where political authority is steered by powerful interests rather than democratic institutions and the will of the people, has continued to cast a long shadow over governance, stability, and public trust.

Godfatherism is not defined by personalities alone, but by patterns of control. It manifests when political structures are dominated by a few, when loyalty is rewarded above competence, and when public office is treated as a means to consolidate influence rather than serve the people. In such an environment, elections risk becoming procedural formalities while real power is negotiated away from the electorate.

The Cost to Rivers State:

The consequences of Rivers State have been far reaching. Political godfatherism has often bred instability, encouraged internal power struggles, and distracted leaders from the core responsibilities of governance. Instead of sustained

attention to development, education, healthcare, security, and economic growth, administrations are frequently forced to navigate political pressures that undermine continuity and effective decision-making.

More importantly, godfatherism weakens democracy at its foundation.

“When elected leaders are accountable to political patrons rather than citizens, transparency suffers and public confidence erodes.”

The people, whose votes should be the ultimate source of authority, find their mandate diluted. Over time, this breeds apathy, cynicism, and disengagement – conditions that is dangerous for any democratic society.

Strengthening Institutions:

Breaking free from godfatherism requires deliberate reforms and collective resolve. At the centre of this effort is the strengthening of democratic institutions. The legislature and judiciary must be allowed to function independently, guided strictly by constitutional provisions and rule of law. Strong institutions reduce the space of unique influence and ensure that power is exercised responsibly and in the public interest.

Political parties also have also have a crucial role to play. Internal democracy must move beyond rhetoric. Transparent primaries, respect for party institutions, and merit- based leadership selection are essential if the grip of godfatherism is to be loosened. Parties must shift away from personality- driven politics and recommit to principles, ideology, and service.

Electoral Integrity and Leadership Courage:

Electoral iIntegrity remains a cornerstone of political freedom. When elections are free, fair, and credible, the influence of godfathers diminishes and the authority of the people is restored. Electoral bodies, security agencies, civil society organizations, and citizens themselves must work together to protect the sanctity of the vote and ensure that democratic choices are respected.

Leadership courage is equally indispensable. Those trusted with public office must demonstrate independence, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to service. Political leadership should not be an extension of private influence, but a public trust exercised with responsibility and restraint. History favour leadership govern by principles rather than patronage.

The Role of Citizens and Civil Society:

Citizens are not without power in this struggle. An informed and engaged populace remains the strongest antidote to godfatherism. Through civic participation, peace advocacy, and sustained demand for accountability, Rivers people can insist on transparent governance and reject imposed leadership. The media traditional institutions, and religious bodies must continue to uphold democratic values and promote responsible public discourse.

Breaking the chains of godfatherism is neither simple nor immediate. It is a gradual process that demands patience, vigilance, and unity of purpose. Yet it is a necessity journey if Rivers State is to achieve political maturity, stability, and sustainable development. Political freedom is not merely the absence of domination by power interests, it is the presence of strong institutions, accountable leadership, and an empowered citizenry.

A Path Forward:

Rivers State possesses immense human culture and economic potential. Unlocking this potential requires a political environment where authority flows from the people, governance is driven by the public good, and democracy is protected undue influence. Beyond godfatherism lies the promise of a free, faire, and more Prosperous Rivers State. That promise must now be pursued with resolve wisdom, and collective commitment.

The time for bold reform, active civic engagement, and principled leadership is now. The people’s voice must be restored and Rivers State must reclaim its place as a model of democratic governance in the Niger Delta and across Nigeria.
